James Arness has died James Arness James Arness, TV icon and star of the series Gunsmoke Western, one of the largest representations of the environment, has died. He was 88. Arness after made several television appearances, including in the late 1970s TV miniseries How the West Was Won. According to his internet site, Arness is survived by his wife, Janet; 2 sons; and 6 grandchildren. He also was the creature in the 1955 sci-fi horror movie The Thing from another World.
