Bohemian Grove

Bohemian Grove : Every July, a few of the richest and most herculean men in the global gather at a 2,700 acre campground in Monte Rio, Calif., for two weeks of heavy drinking, super-secret talks, druid worship (the group insists they're simply “revering the Redwoods”), and other rituals. Their proposal to escape the “frontier culture,” or uncivilized interests, of common men, The folks that gather at Bohemian Grove - who have included prominent business leaders, former United States. Presidents, musicians, and oil barons - are told that “Weaving Spiders Come Not Here,” meaning business deals are to be left outside. One exception was in 1942, when a planning for the Manhattan Project took place at the grove, leading to the creation of the atom bomb. Spokespersons for Bohemian Grove say the folks that gather there “share a passion for the outdoors, euphony, and theater. The club is so hush-hush that little can be definitively said about it, but much of what we know today is from those who have infiltrated the camp, admitting Texas-based filmmaker Alex Jones. In 2000, Jones and his cameraman entered the camp with a hidden camera and were able to movie a Bohemian Grove ceremony, Cremation of the Care. During the ceremony, members wear costumes and cremate a coffin effigy called “Care” before a 40-foot-owl, in deference to the surrounding Redwood trees. Bohemian Grove’s spokesperson calls the ceremony “a traditional melodic drama celebrating nature and summertime.” The spokesperson also said that while Jones’ comments are inaccurate, the footage is real

walter payton: Lake Forest, sick, according to a new book Chicago Bears star Walter Payton Abuse of painkillers I am retired and commits suicide. In "Sweetness: Walter Payton Enigmatic Life," writer Jeff Pearlman says the Hall of Fame running back used a mixture of Tylenol and codeine to retire, keep tanks of nitrous oxide in his garage, and even Ritalin from a friend whose son has been prescribed pills. Pearlman writes that Payton drew the suspicion of pharmacists and a warning from the police after visiting several drugstores to have a dentist's prescription for morphine filled. Payton's longtime agent, Bud Holmes, is quoted as saying "Walter was pounding his body with medication." The book goes on sale Oct. 4. An excerpt appears in this week's Sports Illustrated. Holmes and Payton's executive assistant, Ginny Quirk, recall receiving suicidal calls at all hours during the mid-1990s, and Pearlman reports Payton was living apart from his wife Connie and having extramarital affairs after retirement. That created an awkward situation at his 1993 Hall of Fame induction, with Connie and his mistress attending. Quirk is quoted as saying it was her job to keep them apart. "The introduction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame is supposed to be the greatest moment in his life," Quirk says. "And in truth, it was probably the worst.. Four full days, and Lita and Connie were like two ships passing in the night. If Connie was scheduled to come late, I'd make sure Lita was there early. If Connie was there early, Lita would be there late. I can't describe the horror of that trip." Payton spent all 13 seasons with the Bears and retired as the NFL's all-time leading rusher after the 1987 season. He died from a rare liver disease and bile duct cancer in 1999. In a statement, the Bears said Payton's "competitive spirit lives with us today. ”When we take the field every Sunday, we represent the great players like Walter, who helped build an organization rich," the organization said. "Nothing can change our feelings of men, and stronger than we lose around Halas Hall for this day."walter payton:

Markoff "Craigslist Killer 'Philip Suicide: Philip Markoff, a medical student at Boston University said: "Craigslist killer" after he allegedly went on a crime spree killer and gambling, suicide in prison today, officials said. Steve Tompkins, Chief of Foreign Affairs, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, said Sheriff Deptartment Markoff has died, apparently of suicide in the Nashua Street Jail. It 'was pronounced dead at 10:17, Tompkins said.A statement from the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said Markoff was alone in his cell and all evidence indicated that he took his own life. "A comprehensive investigation will be conducted to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding his death," the statement said. A law enforcement source told ABC News that Markoff was able to take a razor blade from one of the disposable razors jail inmates are allowed to use, and he used it to slash not only his wrists but also the femoral artery in his leg. He then wrapped the wound in his leg in a garbage bag to conceal the blood, and put another garbage bag over his head and tied it tight around his neck, the source said. "He didn't come out for breakfast. He didn't come out for morning rec [recreation]. They went in to check on him and he was dead," the law enforcement source said. "He clearly knew what he was doing," the source said. "He used his medical expertise." Sources told ABC News that Markoff was being threatened by fellow inmates because he took their canteens playing chess. Saturday would have been Markoff's first wedding anniversary, had he not been arrested after allegedly attacking and robbing three women he met through ads they had posted online. He had attempted suicide at least twice before since his arrest, sources have told ABC News. Markoff, 23, was facing a slew of charges stemming from the murder of masseuse Julissa Brisman, an aspiring drug counselor from New York City who was shot dead in her room at the Marriot Copley Place Hotel on April 14, 2009. Brisman had allegedly booked a "sexual release" massage appointment with the BU medical student that day. Four days earlier, Markoff allegedly bound and robbed a Las Vegas hooker at the Westin Hotel. And on April 16, 2009, police say he attacked and robbed an exotic dancer at a hotel room in Warwick, R.I. All three victims posted erotic advertisements on the online networking site Craigslist. Markoff was arrested on April 20, 2009, as he and his fiancée, Megan McAllister, were en route to Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, where they had reserved an $88 room for the night. Evidence linking Markoff to the crimes, including panties from his victims, plastic handcuffs used to bind them and a gun, were found beneath the bed Markoff shared with McAllister. A few days after his arrest - and his fiancee testified to his innocence - Markoff tried to kill himself in the Nashua Street Jail by pulling the strips of leather boat shoes to create a small loop that wrapped around a bar cell. This landed him in a separate unit for the first 30 days of incarceration. Initially, McAllister stood by Markoff. She sent an email to ABC News the day after his first suicide attempt defends and asserts that the media had the story all wrong.Markoff "Craigslist Killer 'Philip Suicide:

So it’s fresh.” Though Rimes said it took her all of 30 minutes to get ready for their night out, Cibrian needed a little more time. “It took me an hour and a half,” he joked, making Rimes giggle. “And there is a big discrepancy there, and I don’t like that.” So what’d he think of his first New York City runway show? “It’s a lot of hoopla,” the Playboy Club star admitted. “But not too much,” That’s not to say he wouldn’t have preferred to be at a baseball game though. “He’s so boyish,” said Rimes. “So, you know.”Mandy Moore, Julianne Hough and Joanna Garcia Swisher also sat in the front row at the show, which featured bold colored cocktail dresses off and leather-trimmed robes." AEG Acknowledges the Interest of Sacramento Sports and Entertainment Complex

AEG Acknowledges the Interest of Sacramento Sports and Entertainment Complex: It was not a question of whether it was when. Anschutz Entertainment Group, best known as the stadium and field operations giant AEG, first acknowledged on Friday that could "assist" in Sacramento Mayor Johnson, Kevin and Big Think coalition Sacramento in its search for space, according to the bag of the bee. The involvement of AEG, the arena was so secret initiative as LeBron hairline, but without the illusion of a band trying to hide. According to sources, that ‘assistance’ should come in the form of tens of millions of dollars of up-front money, assuming of course that AEG can come to terms with the City of Sacramento, the Kings, and the NBA. In return they would get profits from operating the arena, and using the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon they could also see benefits from the fact that their partially-owned subsidiary, the ICON-David Taylor Group, is providing the logistical backbone for Think Big Sacramento and its proposals. Taylor, whose development company David Taylor Interests would like to build the arena, has also expressed interest in buying up properties located near the arena. And the AEG, Taylor, Darius Anderson, and many other members of the committee is also to business interests close to the Arena, a mini-genre live THE king of the project because the center is where the Smart Money is going. This is a public declaration of AEG is one of many small steps in Think Big Coalition Sacramento is going, because otherwise run sprints $ 387 million Entertainment and Sports Complex (ESC), which prevents him from leaving the anchor tenant, and Anaheim. KJ’s coalition has a self-imposed, though painfully realistic deadline of December 30th to get a funding plan approved so the city can meet the NBA’s deadline of March 1, 2012 to have funding in place. The next test for the Think Big coalition will come today when the Sacramento City Council will either approve, table, or reject a $550,000 request for lawyers and consultants to be used to officially vet the project and negotiate with third parties such as the NBA and the Maloofs. The city council will also be asked to vote whether to give the ICON-David Taylor Group the authority to start negotiating on behalf of the city with operators. Here’s betting that the operator is AEG. As for Kings Fans’ chances of keeping their team, Tuesday’s vote will be the first time the city council, which will ultimately decide the project’s fate, will be asked to part with cold, hard cash. If any of them are opposed to it, saying so before the city spends a half-million dollars would make some sense. With no real public opposition being shown by the council so far it is likely that they will approve the request, and see what numbers come through the pipeline and how the public reacts to them. If the request is approved, negotiations will commence with the aforementioned parties to determine what level of private funding can be secured, and in turn what level of public funding will be needed. Sources from Think Big Sacramento are in agreement that a public vote to generate funds for an ESC would be an abject failure, so they don’t plan on using public funds that would trigger a public vote. Because of this limitation they’ve taken a kitchen sink approach where everything from hotel fees, ticket surcharges, cell phone towers on the arena, and the sale of city lands have all come into play. Local kids have taken to selling lemonade to raise funds, and Think Big may just need it. But finding enough money to hit the magic number isn’t their only challenge. Make sure that the city is convenient to vote "yes" is the measure at issue is the task No. 1 So far, the Think Big campaign is a coalition of town hall meetings to go out presidential race throughout the region, and the media campaign has not seen before in political arena. While there will always be skeptics and opponents of this measure, we do not know that the last city council meeting, where every commentator has argued the public arena and found the voices of dissent. Today we will see, if the first is shown.AEG Acknowledges the Interest of Sacramento Sports and Entertainment Complex:

Romo Will Return As The Washington Redskins Visit The Dallas Cowboys

Romo Will Return As The Washington Redskins Visit The Dallas Cowboys : Frank Doyle Monday play previews tonight Night Football Washington visits Dallas! It took all week for the NFL betting line for this game to emerge as the world waited for news of Tony Romo. The news has finally arrived in Dallas will be a favorite at home three points with Romo in the center, where Washington Irving comes to take on the Cowboys. Will it be the full Romo though? Boomer Esiason questioned the Dallas doctors over the weekend, wondering just how fit to play Romo can be with a fractured rib and a “tiny tear” in his lung. It’s a tricky question for the League. Player safety is of greater concern to the NFL than it has been but the sport’s ethos is still about tough guys playing through pain. Sir Charles Barkley crossed sports during the week to say he thought Romo had to return to the field against San Francisco, because he would never be forgiven if he didn’t. Whatever. Tony Romo will start tonight with some sort of flak jacket protection to defend against DeAngelo Hall placing a mental bulls-eye on Romo’s ribcage and looking forward to taking a good shot at him at some stage during the hour. After so many seasons of disappointment since the glory days of the first Joe Gibbs Era, there’s a giddy atmosphere about Washington right now. A ball control offense and good defense sees the Redskins off to a 2-0, 1-1-0 ATS start and a popular bet to spring a surprise on Dallas tonight. And Felix Jones has a separated shoulder. There’s a case to be made for substituting the Cowboys’ famous helmet star with a band-aid for tonight’s game. Washington is bringing a lot of attitude this year. DeAngelo Hall’s comments about targeting Romo follow a trend set by Rex Grossman when he said that Washington would win the NFC East. But for all their trash-talking, the truth is that the Redskins had to come from behind against both Minnesota and Arizona to get their 2-0 start. One of these days, the wind will change and they will be captured this way. Grossman and Romo are stars, but this game that the defense is likely to dominate. Washington's defense is good and DeMarcus Ware Dallas led the league in sacks last year. The over / under for the game is set to take the 45 most intelligent play in this Monday night.Romo Will Return As The Washington Redskins Visit The Dallas Cowboys

The Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers: Pittsburgh Steelers Ben Roethlisberger and the defense are late in the championship game did it again? James Harrison, the late Curtis Painter and the sack of Troy Polamalu of the 16-yard fumble return for a touchdown gave the Steelers at the end of the second half to lead. Shaun Suisham Roethlisberger set for 38-yard field goal with 4 seconds left to give the 23-20 victory at Indianapolis on Sunday night Pittsburgh. It looked nothing like the Steelers' trademark pattern until the closing minutes. Roethlisberger turned over the ball three times during an 11-minute span in the first half, Pittsburgh 2-1 rushed for only 67 yards and the vaunted Steelers defense produced only one sack the one Polamalu scored on. But the Steelers took Roethlisberger finished 60 yard goal kick Suisham March. Roethlisberger was 25 with 37,364 yards a touchdown. Mike Wallace caught five passes for 144 yards and 81-yard score, the longest of his career. Feisty but the Colts 0-3 rallied from a 10-point deficit in the first half, took a 13-10 halftime lead and not lag behind again until Polamalu scored with 5:13 still the game. Joseph Addai ran 17 times for 86 yards and scored on a 6-yard run that tied it at 20 with 2:09 to go. Indy's defense just couldn't hold it. Pittsburgh took advantage quickly. It got a 48-yard field goal from Suisham on the opening possession and took advantage of a terrible mismatch linebacker Pat Angerer on Wallace for the 81-yard pass to make it 10-0 in the first quarter. So Indy defense did its best imitation of Pittsburgh. Robert Mathis removed Roethlisberger on a sack near midfield and recovered the ball as set up Adam Vinatieri from 21 yards to midfield through the lens of the second quarter. On the next series, Dwight Freeney stripped from the opposite side, Roethlisberger on another bag. Jamaal Anderson picked up the ball, cut in midfield and used a block Conner brilliant man to overcome a 47-yard score. It's 10-10.

Heather Locklear at 50: 80 TV Icon's Career Bad B movie: The queen of television 80 years is now the big 5-0. The California girl is as fair as ever, recently announced that is dedicated to her "Melrose Place" costar Jack Wagner, and always kept busy with made-for-TV. But perhaps the star of the TV-a list that have stayed with the small screen: Her film roles have been an uneasy mix of bad decisions. Here, we look back at the cringe-inducing parts in Locklear's campy career. Creature Featur, Even with parts in the hit shows "Dynasty" and "T.J. Hooker," in 1989 Locklear landed her first awful movie role in "The Return of the Swamp Thing." The part: Locklear plays the love interest of this slimy monster think "Godzilla" in the Everglades. The star even extolled the virtues of her character to People magazine this way: "Since my character owns a plant shop, it's only natural she should enjoy making love to a plant." Obviously, actors in the TV world these days can be choosier. Olivia Wilde moved from the TV drama "House" to blockbusters like "Tron: Legacy" and "Cowboys and Aliens” and seems to be well on the way to a major Hollywood career. But movie roles for TV actors in the '80s, not so much, Burning up Locklear probably hoped to set the screen on fire with the 1984 movie "Firestarter." Locklear plays a woman who participated in a medical experiment gone bad that gives her psychic abilities and causes her daughter to set fire to stuff with her mind. The sci-fi flick did launch Drew Barrymore's career the young star played the creepy kid. We're thinking the movie burned Locklear in more ways than one. Melrose Redux In "Uptown Girls", Amanda Locklear channels Witchy "Melrose Place", this time with a career-oriented mother of a young Dakota Fanning. His character taking late Brittany Murphy is at the mercy of his son. This chick is a harmless but forgettable films followed in 2005 was "The Perfect Man" with Amanda, UM, Locklear to play her daughter only to Hilary Duff. I do not remember? Herman Cain Upsets Gov. Rick Perry to Win Florida GOP Straw vote

Herman Cain Upsets Gov. Rick Perry to Win Florida GOP Straw vote: Businessman Herman Cain won the poll of Florida on Saturday against Texas Governor Rick Perry, the GOP presidential pioneer, that only a couple of days before the debate delivered a performance that was widely panned. Cain finished with 37 percent of the vote, while Perry, driven by 15 percent. The former governor of Massachusetts. Mitt Romney followed with 14 percent while former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum drew 11 percent. U.S. Rep. Ron Paul finished with 10.5 percent, former Speaker Newt Gingrich finished with 8.5 percent, while former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman finished with 2 percent. U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, who won the Iowa straw poll in August, finished with just 1 percent of the vote. "Thank you to the Republican voters for this incredible honor of being named the winner of the Presidency 5 straw poll in Florida today," Cain said in a statement after the results were in. "This is a sign of our growing momentum and my candidacy that cannot be ignored. I will continue to share my message of 'common sense solutions' across this country and look forward to spending more time in Florida, a critical state for both the nomination and the general election," he said. Perry, who was expected to finish strong had told the more than 3,000 GOP activists who came from across the state that his rivals made a mistake by skipping the straw poll.. Romney and Bachmann had both left Florida before the voting began and their campaigns discounted the straw poll's role in the campaign. Other first-tier candidates hadn't actively organized for the Florida vote, either. So the results probably won't shuffle the campaign's standings and were shaping up as little more than a popularity contest among the delegates selected by local party organizations. Ahead of the test vote, Perry's campaign bought breakfast for hundreds of the party faithful assembled for a three-day conference and debate. Perry said skipping the straw poll was a blunder. "I think that's a big mistake. I think it's very important," Perry said, citing its history. Previous straw polls have predicted the GOP nominee. Ronald Reagan won in 1979, George H.W. Bush in 1987 and Kansas Sen. Bob Dole in 1995. The Republican Party of Florida, however, has not organized the test vote in recent years. Perry, a late entrant into the Republican primary who quickly led national polls, stumbled in recent weeks. His strident defense of in-state tuition rates for illegal immigrants put him on the wrong side of the GOP's conservative base. Its competitor worked in opposition to the benefit of a fence along the US-Mexico border, and its support for mandatory vaccination of girls against the sexually transmitted disease. Questioning Florida win may help, especially before the deadline Friday for the latest snapshot of fundraising. Florida, led by Perry, after a Republican rally Saturday, Mackinac Island, Michigan. Romney, son of former governor of Michigan, is also set to address the crowd, where he spent his youth.Herman Cain Upsets Gov. Rick Perry to Win Florida GOP Straw vote:

Obama's No Child Left Behind PACKAGES Waiver In Exchange For Evaluations Of Teachers, Standards

Obama's No Child Left Behind PACKAGES Waiver In Exchange For Evaluations Of Teachers, Standards: Chris Christie's 2012 re-RunStates who wish to leave specific No Child Left Behind legislation is to adjust to four different administrative reform laws that reflect the priorities of President Barack Obama announced Friday morning. "To help states, districts and schools that are ready to move forward in education reform, our government gives flexibility to the law in exchange for a real commitment to change," Obama said in a statement released by the White House on Thursday. "It is not intended to give states and districts respite from responsibility, but to release the energy to improve our schools locally." On Thursday, the White House circulated materials explaining that the administration will offer a "flexibility package." The No Child Left Behind law, passed by Congress a decade ago during the George W. Bush administration, requires regular standardized testing and the disaggregation of educational data by subgroup. It also states that just about 100 percent of students must reach proficiency in math and reading by 2014. As the deadline has approached, an increasing number of schools in each state have been labeled as "failing" under No Child Left Behind, in part because the reporting model focuses on raw scores, not improvement in scores. "Failing" schools face escalating consequences. States such as Montana and Idaho have resisted the ever-increasing performance targets, saying the law strains their capacities and leads to an overly broad portrayal of schools as underperforming. In light of those concerns, a White House fact sheet stated, the administration will allow states to request "flexibility through waivers of specific provisions" of No Child Left Behind, including the timeline for proficiency; "flexibility regarding school improvement and accountability requirements," which will allow states to set their own consequences for so-called failing schools; and "flexibility related to the use of federal education funds." Rural districts will have more freedom. A state that requests these waivers, the fact sheet said, will have to show that: It has already "adopted college- and career-ready standards in reading/language arts and mathematics" and administer "tests aligned" with these standards. The fact sheet does not detail what exactly such standards would entail, although U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has previously said states that haven't adapted the Common Core State Standards will not be barred from requesting waivers. It has set systems "of differentiated recognition, accountability and support," which includes turnaround plans targeted at the lowest 5 percent of the states' schools. It is "evaluating and supporting teacher and principal effectiveness" with a process that includes educator input. A senior administration official said on a conference call that this process must consider test scores. Beyond that, few details are available about the plan, such as the amount of funding over which states will have more discretion and the turnaround models that failing schools will have to use. No Child Left Behind has been up for renewal since 2007, and the administration released its own blueprint for the law in March 2010. But congressional gridlock has prevented formal reauthorization so far. Both Republicans and Democrats have introduced small components of a reauthorization -- with one measure involving charter schools passing last week -- but few have gained traction. In August, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said Obama had approved plans to, in effect, reform the law without going through Congress: The secretary would waive specific provisions of the law in exchange for states agreeing to adopt favored reforms. Under No Child Left Behind, the Secretary of Education may waive provisions of the law for states in need, but he has no explicit authority to ask states to adopt reforms in exchange. The expanded waiver process is the administration's attempt to implement its own reforms, and the process comes with political risk. "The GOP is trying to develop a theme that Obama is overreaching in terms of federal power," said Jack Jennings, who heads the Center on Education Policy. "That's the argument they're using with the health care bill and the financial institution regulations. Now they're going to use it in education. [The administration is] playing into the narrative, and they know it." Already, GOP congressmen are criticizing the plan. In a floor speech Thursday, former Education Secretary and current Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) urged Duncan to "show restraint" with waivers. "Just because the secretary has every state over a barrel doesn't mean he should be tempted to use this opportunity to become a national school board," said Alexander. Rep. John Kline (R-Minn.), who chairs the House education committee, said in a statement that he "simply cannot support a process that grants the Secretary of Education sweeping authority to handpick winners and losers." On the other hand, a statement from Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) called the waivers the "best temporary solution." Harkin oversees the Senate committee responsible for the bipartisan mockup of a reauthorization bill. "I am concerned that waivers provide a patchwork approach rather than a national solution," he said.Obama's No Child Left Behind PACKAGES Waiver In Exchange For Evaluations Of Teachers, Standards:

The chris christie: The governor of New Jersey Chris Christie decides not to enter the 2012 presidential race and says he will leave the major donors Republicans know within days if his plans Newsmax has learned. In recent weeks, several major donors, and Republican fundraisers have been invited to the popular Republican governor to reconsider his decision not to run and enter the first GOP. These advocates note that Christie was significant support GOP away from the main battle. Many fundraisers have not yet led to commit to any pretender to the primary current, including warning, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. Newsmax has learned that efforts to develop Christie led to a powwow held top-secret last week with Christie and several notable billionaires Republican. A source familiar with the meeting suggested that Christie seemed inclined to enter the race but said he needed more time. Christie is committed to making a final decision "within two weeks," said the source. Another source involved in fundraising tells NewsMax that the fundraising of the Republican Party and committed donors received phone calls from top political consultants Christie, seeking comment on its possible entry into the race. Earlier this week Christie refers to the effort for the project when he spoke at a special forum that included Indiana, Mitch Daniels, Governor. Christie gives a hearing in New Jersey, Rider University, as the current GOP candidates do not answer the public's appetite for real leadership. "I think what the country is hungry for more than anything else now is someone of the stature and credibility to say and say," My point is that the face of this crisis "," Christie said. Christie continued: "The fact that no one yet who is running President, I think he did it effectively, because you still hear people ask if it is re-Daniels, and I wonder if I will again." Christie has always categorically stated not to be president in 2012, had yet to get noticed a remarkable job in New Jersey. But in New Jersey and New York Republican donors who have supported and bag, Christie has also been tried over the last few months, the campaign of Texas Governor Perry. Christie older employees have been quietly urging his supporters not to commit Perry, who show, Christie was still mulling the offer and would make a final decision after New Jersey legislative races will be completed in November. Former Ravens, Browns OT Orlando Brown dead at 40: Former Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns OT Orlando Brown is dead 40 years. Firefighters found Brown in Baltimore on Friday, when he was insensitive to the house near the harbor, the Associated Press. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said there were no signs of trauma or suspected activity.Nicknamed "Zeus", the 6-foot-7, 360-pound lineman has started 119 games for a nine-year career as a wound interrupted. "He's one of the greatest men I know – really a gentle giant away from the game," said Ravens LB Ray Lewis, Brown's former teammate. "He was the original Raven.”When you heard his voice on the field, you knew things were going to be all right. He would say: 'Keep playing. Keep fighting. Do it for us. Do it for your teammates. Lew, Lew, keep it up!' I can almost hear that voice right now. And, oh, how he loved his sons. They lost a great father. So sad, just so sad," Brown was infamously struck in the eye by the penalty flag of referee Jeff Triplette during a Browns game in 1999. After leaving the field, Brown returned to the field and shoved Triplette to the ground, then filed a $200 million lawsuit, claiming that the injury prematurely shortened his career. Brown was initially suspended until the league learned that Brown had been temporarily blinded in one eye.Brown and the NFL reached a $15-20 million settlement in 2002, with the stipulation that if he returned, the NFL would get half of his after-tax income each season, up to a total of $1 million, according to The Washington Post. Brown made a comeback with the Ravens in 2003, starting 34 games in three seasons before retiring. The NFL sued him for $500,000 in 2004, claiming that Brown ignored requests to pay back the money. Ravens Director of Player Development Harry Swayne, Brown's former teammate and close friend, described him as a "puppy dog". "It's tough, it's tough," Swayne told the Carroll County Times. "I talked to him a month ago and told him, 'Zeus, you didn't have to block half the people you played against because they were scared of you.' He was a puppy dog, a big old puppy dog with a little bit of a bark. He had a lot of friends around the league. He was one of the best guys. It's a tough loss." Bill Belichick, the Browns' head coach from 1991-1995, said Friday that Brown was a "true throwback player ... as tough as they come." "I am extremely shocked and saddened to hear the news about Orlando Brown," Belichick said Friday. "Orlando improved as a player as much as anyone I have ever seen, as he went from being a defensive lineman at South Carolina State to becoming one of the game's top offensive tackles." Said Ravens DB Ed Reed: "This is a sad day; Zeus was a fire-starter, His energy  he would get us going at practices, in training camp and games, how he loved to play football, "Former Ravens, Browns OT Orlando Brown dead at 40

The NFL Suspended Three Games, Cedric Benson

The NFL Suspended Three Games, Cedric Benson:Bengals running back Cedric Benson said through a team spokesman that he has not been informed of a three-game suspension. Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports reported earlier in the day that Benson would be suspended starting with next Sunday’s game against Buffalo. The suspension would also cover the Oct. 9 game at Jacksonville and Oct. 16 home game against Indianapolis. There is an appeal hearing scheduled for Tuesday, which means he would be eligible to play in Sunday’s contest against San Francisco. Benson was charged with assault of a former roommate on July 16, which occurred during the lockout. He served time three weeks ago for an assault charge related to a 2010 incident outside an Austin, Texas, bar. Benson had a meeting with Commissioner Roger Goodell last year about the Austin bar incident and did not suspend him at that time. There also have not been any suspensions of players who violated the league’s personal conduct policy during the lockout. The NFL Suspended Three Games, Cedric Benson:

The Economy Meg: Whitman’s Other Problem

The Economy Meg: Whitman’s Other Problem: As much as any damage caused by LĂ©o Apotheker’s inability to successfully communicate or execute his decisions during his 11-month tenure atop Hewlett-Packard, new chief executive Meg Whitman is concerned about what has happened to H.P.’s competitive environment. “The pace of change has accelerated” around H.P., Ms. Whitman said in an interview Thursday evening. “We have to anticipate, and anticipate and anticipate the trends.” These include the shift from PCs to tablets like the Apple iPad and the rise of low-cost corporate computing through Internet-based rentals of computing power like Amazon Web Services, she said. “We have to look at our whole go-to-market approach,” she said, referring to the way products are marketed. Whatever she chooses to do, she indicated it will be led by hardware sales and not Mr. Apotheker’s software-led philosophy. During a call with Wall Street analysts, Ms. Whitman talked about the need for H.P. to temporarily slow its investments and share repurchases, to rebuild the company’s damaged balance sheet. She may need the money for more than that however. In a later conversation with The New York Times, the newly reminted chief executive identified weaknesses in the sales of its usually lucrative printer cartridges. “Printing is a 50 percent consumer business,” she said. “The consumer is pulling back, mostly in Europe, but to be honest here too.” While economic weakness in the United States isn’t news, H.P. identified weakness in Europe in the analysts’ call. While this will affect revenue in the quarter, according to the company’s chief financial officer, the company expects to deliver its projected earnings per share this quarter. The outlook from there is uncertain, indicating H.P. will deliver the earnings through cuts, more than a revival of demand elsewhere. Where will those come from? “I’ve got 43 days until the end of the quarter,” she said. “I’ve got to do some homework.”The Economy Meg: Whitman’s Other Problem:

The kirstie alley: Kirstie Alley is preparing to take legal action against the newspaper after editors discovered he published an article alleging massive weight loss is the result of an eating disorder. The former star of a sudden, who has struggled with weight problems for years, has been shedding pounds since he was forced to take shape as a contestant in dancing with the stars of television earlier this year. She recently claimed to have lost an impressive 100 pounds since March after adopting a new healthy diet and strict exercise regime, and Alley showed off her new slim physique when she walked the runway at an event for New York Fashion Week last week. Her drastic new look has prompted speculation about exactly how she managed to drop down to a U.S. clothing size six - and according to Alley, reporters at the National Enquirer are claiming in an upcoming article that she's become bulimic, forcing herself to vomit after every meal. However, the actress has slammed the allegations and she has vowed to take the Enquirer to court. In a series of posts on her Twitter.com blog, she writes, "Soo. Heard that the Enquirer is running with a story that Im bulemic “sic”o JEEZ! 'Sources' JEEZ. Never hurled “threw up” a meal in my life, JEEZ. Im REALLY commited “sic” “to her diet” and strong willed. The Kirstie Alley wants to be in love after losing 100 Lbs: Kirstie Alley is ready to love again. Having taken a huge 100 pounds and proudly boast slim figure on the track in the Fashion Week in New York, Rebecca Howe on "Cheers" opens in a recent interview with people who are "looking for is to be madly deeply in love. "The actress has admitted that 60 years before losing weight, had no confidence in the bedroom. "I didn't like the way I looked," she said, "and I didn't want to have fat sex." She now embraces her size 6, and added, "For the first time in my life, I know exactly what I want in a man. I want someone who has my back, who is courageous and brave." The former "Dancing with the Stars" contestant once topped the scales at 228 pounds. During the chat taking place in a villa outside Florence, Italy, she remembered that her body "had gotten really weak" at the time. She went on to note that "there was nothing positive about being fat." On clearing the 100 lbs weight-loss mark this past summer, Kirstie recalled, "When I hit that mark, I went, 'That's it!' I have more energy than I've ever had in my whole life." The actress, who turned her life around by changing to an organic diet and following her own weight-loss program, further shared, "I feel back to normal. I have my game again." Law And Order:SVU Premiere/ New hires & old wound

Law And Order:SVU Premiere/ New hires & old wound: Focus on the next season, "Law & Order: SVU" has had people who come to the show. But to a large extent, on Wednesday, "September 21", the main objective was the guy who is gone. Exhibition brings together more or less in real time, after the end of last season. Stabler was found, continue to leave the room after the shooting team "smoked". There's a new hire, Detective Amanda Rollins “Kelli Giddish”, and a very high-profile case clearly modeled on that of former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn “they even name-check him”. The case plays out more or less the way the real one has, but that's not what really drew our interest. The real-life reason for Stabler's departure is that Chris Meloni and the show couldn't agree on a contract extension. Within the show, though, the writers seem to be handling it about as deftly as you can when an actor is just gone. It makes perfect sense that Elliot would be badly shaken after shooting a teenage girl, and that his remaining colleagues, especially Olivia, would be on eggshells. We learn at the end of the episode that he's put in his retirement papers, which at least brings some finality “if not closure” to Stabler's time in the Special Victims Unit. So what about the newbies? With Stabler's fate not resolved until episode's end, we won't see Danny Pino until next week. But early indications are that Giddish might fit in OK. Rollins came on a little too Brenda Johnson in "The Closer" at first, but after that slightly awkward introduction she proved to be a fairly canny detective, albeit a little green. “Also, it felt like Munch and Fin got more screen time than they have in quite a while. That's not a bad thing. "It was also nice to see that Stephanie March ADA Alex Cabot," she and Diane Neal will both be around this season. "We are so confident Linus Roache now an office manager in the prosecutor's office. Cutter has been very good at the courtyard of the original "L & O", but seems a little less comfortable in a supervisory role Legacy. 'S Stabler stay a while, both within the sample and among its fans. However, this episode felt like first step a decent pace of movement. What do you think of the first "Special Victims Unit" season?Law And Order:SVU Premiere/ New hires & old wound

Rick Santorum Fights His Google Problem

Rick Santorum Fights His Google Problem: Republican presidential "candidate", "the term is used very, very loosely on" Rick Santorum is not only conflict with his colleagues at the White House aspirants, but Google. In particular, Rick is not at all satisfied with the results displayed when people type their name into a search engine. All 12 of them, so wrong! Exhilarating, the first result in search of his name was not on his website, but a false definition of "Santorum" graphically described sexual act / product. Go Google Rick Santorum right now if you want the definition. We're not going to spell it out here, but let's just say it stinks worse than his poll numbers. Ironically, more people are undoubtedly doing this now than because they cared about Santorum initially. Maybe you should be thanking them, R Dog. The former U.S. Senator attacked Google, going so far as to suggest that if he were a Democrat, the company would rectify this atrocity immediately. Santorum told Politico in an interview this week that “I suspect if something was up there like that about, say, Joe Biden; they would get rid of it." He contacted Google directly as well to personally plead his case for altering the search engine results, apparently unaware that's not how it works. "If you're a responsible business, you don't let things like that happen in your business that has an impact on the country," he added, delusionally. "To have a business allow that type of filth to be purveyed through their website or through their system is something that they say they can't handle." "I suspect that's not true.” In response, a Google spokesman told CNN in an email, “Google's search results are a reflection of the content and information that is available on the Web. "" Users who want the content removed please contact the webmaster of the page directly. When a webmaster has down a Web page will be removed from Google's search results through the normal scanning process. "" We do not delete content from the search results, except in very limited cases, such as illegal and violations of our guidelines for webmasters.” Translation: Go pound sand, Rick remains to be seen if he has something to say about the GOP debate this evening, who sponsored you cannot make this stuff  to Google.! HP CEO on the chopping block

HP CEO on the chopping block:We can look at the last days of Leo Apotheker as CEO of HP fledglingcompanies. After a series of heavy industry, HP has become a sort of train wreck in recent years, the company has tried a number of wild, new strategies, but few of them have ended up. Most of those strategies have come under the guidance of Apotheker, who was originally hired on to save the company from the trouble it was put in by Mark Hurd, the prior CEO. Hurd was at the helm of what was perhaps the company's biggest scandal, when it was accused of illegally phone-tapping analysts and journalists. Apotheker was supposed to be the savior that prevented HP from sliding down that slippery slope. Instead, under his watch, the company's stock price has dipped 47%. The HP board is now reportedly discussing the possibility of ousting Apotheker from the company. Investors are becoming frustrated with the way HP is heading, andIt was of course under the leadership of Apotheker that HP purchased the failured of a company that was Palm. It was several months before HP was able to do something with the Palm operating system webOS, and once he did, was a disaster. Sales of HP Touchpad pills were so sad that in a matter of weeks, the price dropped to $ 99 just to get rid of inventories. So there is little reason to trust now Apotheker. You might consider a new CEO relatively quickly.HP CEO on the chopping block

The Blaine Gabbert

The Blaine Gabbert: As reported last night, Blaine Gabbert is now Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback. Jaguar went to Luke McCown to start the season, because they knew they could control the game while the offense Gabbert collected more part-time, but after listening to McCown threw four against the Jets in New York and was on the bench in favor of rookie had to move. The fact is that Jaguar was clearly limiting their offense, and customizes its quarterback. In reality, if that was the plan for the Jaguars that's what they should have done from the beginning. If they were going to limit and tailor an offense around a quarterback, why not the rookie, moving forward, we'll now get to watch the growth of a 21-year old rookie quarterback. We need to buckle up. Star-divide while I do believe Gabbert has the talent to be a top quarterback in the NFL, he's going to have his growing pains. He's not going to be perfect but he probably won't be atrocious either. I don't expect Gabbert to go out and throw for 400 yards a game like Cam Newton is doing, but I don't expect him to go out there and look totally inept either. The initial game plans for Gabbert are likely to be very run-centric as he gets a feel for the game. The playbook will slowly open up as Gabbert gets more comfortable in the offense. That being said, sooner than later I feel the Jaguars should open up the offense. Let Gabbert do what is comfortable, throw the ball from 3 + scale attack like the shotgun. He will be able to pass the ball in the center? Absolutely, but the modern NFL, is more than hunting, so it has become more friendly to the quarterback, who comes from a spread of transition to college. The team lack of effective weapons in the future of the game, but they have the tools to work with. When Marcedes Lewis is healthy, he's a great weapon in the passing game because he can line up anywhere and the defense can't pinpoint what he's doing. He can line up on the line of scrimmage and run/pass block, or run a route. That's Lewis' biggest asset, is the defense cannot single out what he's doing, he doesn't have a "tell". The team also has the "potential" of Zach Miller as a match up nightmare as a flex tight end. Mike Thomas is a good safety outlet, who's already been targeted in the passing game four times as much as the next receiver. Outside of that, the team leaves a lot to be desired however, which is why they'll need to line up wide and create natural spacing for their receivers to allow Gabbert room to work. If all else fails, then turn around and hand the ball to Maurice Jones-Drew. It will be fun to watch grow Gabbert, but just remember a few things as it grows: Gabbert is beginning to automatically launch the season; Gabbert will make mistakes, probably many of them. Gabbert will make mistakes. Seriously, it's a rookie. Be patient, as he plays. The Blaine Gabbert

Jonah Hill, James Franco & further: Seth Rogen confirms 'Apocalypse' Cast:Whenever we have a chance to catch up with Seth Rogen is a good time, if only to hear her laugh adorable. Better yet, when the discussion is at hand for his excellent upcoming film "50/50" and long in development survival horror comedy "Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse," Regarding the latter, the last we heard, the shooting will begin in February, we asked Rogen to clarify exactly what the well-known actors have officially signed on the project, because it seems that the cast has changed since the project been announced. “We’ve decided to add more people, so ideally 'Jay and Seth' looks like it has become Jay, Seth, Jonah, Danny, Craig and James," Rogen revealed. That's Baruchel, Rogen, Hill, McBride, Robinson and Franco, by the way. "We all play ourselves," he added. When we brought up another rumored addition, "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe, Rogen said they might have amped up the role a little too much for Radcliffe's tastes. "It does not look like he is ready to push things as far as we [are]," said Rogen that laugh of his catchy. This means that all the guys want to do is really push the envelope, given Radcliffe is well received and that's R-rated in the "Extras" and others. Baruchel, but said they wanted the film to be offensive, so it may be a safe choice for the D-Rad at this stage of his career. "There will be a very aggressive vision of the Apocalypse," he said once. "And I want a lot of dead famous apparitions. Because LA is full of famous people, I want all appearances to be as equals. "Perhaps Radcliffe does not want to play a version of him dead? Jonah Hill, James Franco & further: Seth Rogen confirms 'Apocalypse' Cast.

Baldwin Emmys After Hacking Vetoed Joke LOS ANGELES Leonard Nimoy in the last minute to Alec Baldwin in the Emmy Awards opening due to a flap over a joke about piracy News Corp. phone scandal. Alec Baldwin had saved the segment by playing a fictional president of the Academy of TV-based Jane Lynch. However, Baldwin called when Fox refused to let the joke referred to the hacking scandal involving British tabloid News of the World has closed. Both Fox and News of the World are owned by News Corp. Fox said the network believed it was inappropriate to make light of an issue being taken seriously by the company. The joke reportedly involved Baldwin on a telephone and saying, "Is that you, Rupert?" a reference to News Corp. boss Rupert Murdoch, suggesting he was listening in on the conversation. Baldwin was not at the Emmys because of a previous commitment to attend Tony Bennett's birthday party in New York. He tweeted that Fox killed the joke, "which sucks because I think it would have made them look better." He also tweeted: "If I were enmeshed in a scandal where I hack the phone of families of innocent crime victims purely 4 profit, I'd want that 2 go away, 2." Mark Burnett, who is producing the Emmys telecast, said, "There's nonstop drama, but everything is fine," when asked about the incident. Baldwin is scheduled to host "Saturday Night Live" next week. Director Don Roy King was asked if the NBC show would address Baldwin's joke being cut from the Emmys. "I hope so," said King. However, said it was not his calling, the issue is. Miami Hurricanes and Ohio St Buckeyes College Football Betting Predictions

Miami Hurricanes and Ohio St Buckeyes College Football Betting Predictions: A lot of the luster was taken off this match-up by some off the field issues for both teams that led to suspensions of key players on both sides. In fact, some people are sarcastically calling this the “Ineligi-Bowl.” Ohio St has definitely been hit the hardest by the scandals so far as former coach Jim Tressel was forced to resign and quarterback Terrelle Pryor left the program when additional violations surfaced that would have cost him his eligibility. Both were originally suspended for the first 5 games of this season along with several other key Buckeye players. Miami has their own problems as former booster Nevin Shapiro, a convicted felon, admitted he gave improper benefits to Hurricane players since the early ’90′s, including to 8 current Miami players. The university and the NCAA gave the 8 players staggered suspensions. Five players were suspended for the season opener against Maryland, including quarterbacks Jacory Harris, but will return this week after the Hurricanes had a bye last week. Four other Hurricane players are suspended until at least October. Ohio St, under interim coach Luke Fickell, has weathered the storm so far with 2 wins over Akron 42-0 and Toledo 27-22. Now the #17 Buckeyes go on the road for the first time as the take on the 0-1 Hurricanes. Miami, under first year coach Al Golden, lost 32-24 at Maryland to open the season. Ohio St and Miami are playing for the 5th time in history. Ohio St leads the series officially 2-1 as last year’s 36-24 win in Columbus was vacated by the university. The two schools played a memorable game in the 2003 National Championship with Ohio St winning 31-24 in double overtime. Coming into last week’s game against the Toledo Rockets, Ohio St hadn’t lost to another team from Ohio since 1921. That streak almost came to a crashing halt as Toledo took a 22-21 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Buckeyes scored with 3:17 to go and then held the Rockets to avoid the upset and survive 27-22. The Buckeyes had only 301 total yards including 112 rushing yards. They had 17 first downs and were 3/13 on third and fourth downs. Ohio St held Toledo to 338 total yards including 46 rushing yards. The Rockets had 14 penalties and a turnover and still almost pulled off the upset. Toledo had 16 first downs and was 6/21 on third and fourth down conversions. Ohio St is averaging 409 total yards and 34.5 points a game. The Buckeyes are averaging 241 passing yards a game. Ohio St has 2 turnovers and no sacks. The Buckeyes are 12/30 on third and fourth down conversions. Ohio St is 0/2 on field goals this year. The Buckeyes are allowing 214 yards a game on defense and 11 points. They are allowing only 40.5 rushing yards a game. They have forced 2 turnovers and 9 sacks a game. Buckeye opponents are 9/35 on third and fourth down conversions. Buckeye quarterback Joe Bauserman has done well this season. He is 28/46 passing with 352 passing yards, 4 touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also has 8 carries for 39 yards and a touchdown. Running back Carlos Hyde 39 carries for 169 yards, and 2 touchdowns, along with 5 catches for 39 yards. Rod Smith has 25 carries for 98 yards and a touchdown. Receiver Devin Smith has 5 catches for 119 yards and a touchdown. Jake Stoneburner had 8 catches for 93 yards and 4 touchdowns. Kicker Drew Basil is 9/9 on extra points but 0/2 on field goals. Three Buckeye players return from a 2 game suspensions for this game including OL Corey Linsley, RB Jordan Hall, and DB Travis Howard. However, Rb Dan Herron, WR Devier Posey, OL Mike Adams, and DE Solomon Thomas won’t return until October 8. Despite the suspensions Miami took a 24-23 lead with 4 minutes to go in the game against Maryland. Maryland scored 9 points in the last 1:39 of the game to win 32-24. Miami had 367 total yards including 172 rushing yards. Ten penalties and 4 turnovers doomed the Hurricanes, including two defensive touchdowns. The last one occurred with 39 second left, a 54 yard interception return, allowed Maryland to cover the 4 point college football betting line. Miami had 18 first downs and was 7/16 on third and fourth down conversions. The Hurricanes allowed 499 total yards including 348 passing yards. Maryland had 28 first downs and was 8/16 on third and fourth down conversions. Quarterback Stephen Morris struggled as he replaced the suspended Jacory Harris. Morris was 19/28 passing with 195 yards and 2 interceptions with no touchdowns. He did have a rushing touchdown though. Harris returns for this game. Harris threw for 1,793 yards, 14 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, and added 2 rushing touchdowns as well last year. Running back Lamar Miller had 18 carries for 119 yards and a touchdown, along with 2 catches for 3 yards. Mike James had only 34 yards rushing but did have a rushing touchdown.  Allen Hurns and Tommy Streeter each had 4 catches for the Hurricanes. Kicker Jake Wieclaw made all 3 extra points he tried along with a 30 yard field goal. Miami is 0-1 against the spread and the game went over the total. Ohio St is 1-1 ATS this season and both games went under. Ohio St is 18-6 ATS on Saturday in the last 3 seasons, 15-5 ATS with 6 days of rest in the same span, and 10-2 ATS in non-conference games in the last 3 seasons. The Buckeyes are 11-3 ATS in all games the last two seasons, including 9-1 on grass. Miami is 1-4 ATS in the last 5 as a favorite, as a favorite of less than 3 points, against a team with a winning record, in con-conference games, against Big Ten teams, and 1-5 in the last 6 on grass. Miami is 3-12 ATS in the last 15 games after a bye week. We don’t know how these teams will deal with the suspensions. Miami shot themselves in the foot two weeks ago with penalties and turnovers but should be better as they get 5 players back from suspension. Ohio St almost stumbled against Toledo last week. This should be a close game, but I think Miami pulls it out at the end. Take it to the bank, our college football handicappers are the best in the business. The Warren Zevon, 180 Gram Vinyl

The Warren Zevon, 180 Gram Vinyl: Warren Zevon has been checked out of the Terran Hotel for nearly eight years now. Yet despite an at times callous neglect by the survivors back here on Earth, his recorded output has had numerous reevaluations, both before and after his death.  With Rhino Records massive reissue campaign of the Elektra Asylum catalog on both double CD collections, complete with demos and bonus outtakes, and on high quality 180-gram vinyl, we’re able to take one more look at Zevon’s underrated material.  I’m taking a look at his Asylum-issued, self-titled record today and asking myself how it wasn’t the enormous hit that it should have been. Warren Zevon is actually the singer’s second album.  His first, Wanted Dead or Alive, hit the shelves in 1969, seven years before the follow-up and too little fanfare.  What made his self-titled release different is that he was able to call upon the talents of numerous musicians with which he’d acquainted himself in his ten years in the music business.  Chief among them is the record’s producer, Jackson Browne, and he’s followed closely by a who’s who of Los Angeles’ Mellow Mafia.  Zevon had worked up a great deal of material and all of the songs on the record bear his name on the songwriting credits.  While Zevon would become well known for his use of satire and the way he deployed it in biting political and social commentary, the songs here also contain autobiographical elements which must have required him to dig deeply in order to boldly lay his soul bare to the listener.  In all, it’s a very strong piece of work and there are several moments which demand further discussion. Side 1’s “Mama Couldn’t Be Persuaded” is pure autobiography.  It’s the tale of a family warning their daughter “don’t marry that gambling man” and how the daughter’s ignorance of the warning led to a chaotic and unsettled life for the daughter’s son with the gambler.  You see, Zevon’s father was in fact a professional gambler.  The need for a man with that kind of “job” to go where the action was hot and also flee to where the heat was not so hot caused the young Zevon’s family to relocate frequently.  His parents did eventually divorce when Zevon was sixteen, but by then his formative years had already left him with a skewed worldview.  To augment Zevon’s voice and piano on the song, Browne and JD Souther added harmony vocals, while Browne hired Waddy Wachtel for guitar duties and multi-instrumentalist David Lindley to play fiddle. Wachtel’s lines are especially funky and really serve the upbeat approach of what could have been a song wallowing in lament.  Zevon’s casual display is just one example of how he fearlessly discussed any topic he felt was deserving of a good song. Side one closes with “The French Inhaler,” which discarded Lindley, Browne, and Souther in favor of harmony vocals delivered by Glenn Frey and Don Henley.  Zevon’s almost baroque piano provides a mock elegance to this song discussing a woman who’s run out of luck and options in her pursuit of an acting career.  Now reduced to a junkie/wino/prostitute, her persistent allure is celebrated by Zevon, even though he “drank up all the money” during their relationship.  Though she’s sliding out the door of the bar straight into skid row, Zevon seems very aware that, for the turn of more fortunate cards, he could very easily be following right behind her.  The song, like many from Zevon, seems to be the skeleton of a screenplay for a heart wrenching movie that’s yet to be filmed.  Sweetening the dimly lit affair are the background vocals, which are as beautiful as any delivered by the duo while recording with The Eagles. Side 2 has its own surprises, including the seeming forecast called “I’ll Sleep When I’m dead.”  Zevon is on piano once more and he’s also playing some wicked harmonica.  He’s joined by Wachtel and the legendary Jim Kewskin Jug Band member Fritz Richmond on, what else, jug.  Browne also employed renowned studio drummer Gary Mallaber (Eddie Money, Steve Miller, Van Morrison, and Bruce Springsteen) and longtime Zevon associate Jorge Calderon on harmony vocals.  The song’s protagonist likes to “raise a little harm” while “drinking heartbreak motor oil and Bombay gin” as prescribed medicine.  He’s describing himself of course, and the life he’d been leading which dictated the nickname F. Scott Fitzevon.  He did escape the clutches of alcoholism later in life, but in the mid-70s he had no intention of slowing his pace and he was frank about that fact. “Join Me in L.A.,” a lyrically sparse piece, is Zevon’s praise to the city he called home at the time.  With the singer switching to guitar on the song, Browne took up piano duties and left the harmony background vocals to Bonnie Raitt and Rosemary Butler.  Legendary saxophonist Bobby Keys (misspelled as “Keyes” on the jacket), famous for his work with The Rolling Stones, Bobby Vee, Buddy Holly, The Who, Harry Nilsson, and Joe Cocker, among others, gives a fiery performance.   The grande finale, “Desperadoes under the Eaves” followed; complete with a string section and lush harmony vocals by Carl Wilson, Browne, and a mysterious outfit called “The Gentlemen Boys” (my guess is this is really The Beach Boys).  Zevon is drinking again and reflecting that California will slide into the ocean, but not until after he’s paid his bar tab.  There’s a brilliant verse – “Don’t the sun look angry through the trees/Don’t the trees look like crucified thieves/Don’t you feel like desperadoes under the eaves/Heaven helps the one who leaves” –that serves as one more reminder that, despite the ugliness and loneliness, L.A. is where Zevon planned to stay until he was done in by either his drinking or the San Andreas Fault Line. Warren Zevon is a record that exemplifies all that was indicative of album rock and soft rock radio in 1976.  Yet he’d have to wait for the follow-up, Excitable Boy, two years later to gain any success.  He took more chances as his career continued, penning wilder lyrics and employing allegory to a greater degree.  Although listeners didn’t embrace the record as expected, it’s not because Zevon lacked talent, identity, or bravery.  He should have been famous right out of the starting blocks, but perhaps we remember him better as the man who stumbled first.

Ontario vs. Quebec Cross-Province Boxing Rivalry: McGuinness- Gaudet on October 22:TORONTO “September 15, 2011” With all due respect to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadians, the long, rich arch-rivalry in sports between Ontario and Quebec is, perhaps more prevalent today in boxing than even hockey. The aforementioned rivalry heats up October 22 at The Hersey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, when unbeaten World Boxing Association “WBA” No. 11-rated Logan Cotton McGuinness, of Ontario, takes on and former world title challenger Benoit Gaudet, of Quebec, in the 10-round main event on a card presented by Hennessy Sports in association with Interbox and United Promotions. The adversarial provincial competition continues November 5 at Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec as two-time world champion Steve “The Canadian Kid” Molitor (33-2, 12 KOs), of Ontario, faces Sebastian Gauthier “21-2, 13 Kos” of Quebec, in the co-feature on the Lucian Bute-Glen Johnson card, presented by Interbox. “The cross-provincial rivalry between Ontario and Quebec is intense in all sports,” promoter Adam Harris “Hennessy Sports” said. “Canada’s rich boxing history is keeping this rivalry going strong today. From Ontario’s Lennox Lewis, George Chuvalo and Tommy Burns, to Quebec’s Arturo Gatti, Lucan Bute and Jean Pascal, both provinces have had so many great boxers over the years, right up to now. We’re proud to be continuing this heated boxing rivalry with McGuiness fighting Gaudet.” Red-hot prospect McGuinness (15-0-1, 7 KOs), fighting out of Orangeville, Ontario, captured the North American Boxing Association “NABA” Lightweight Champion for the past 13 months, but the Irish-Canadian will abdicate his belt in order to challenge Gaudet for the vacant NABA super featherweight title. The 24-year-old McGuiness forced Buzz Grant to retire on the stool after two rounds in their Sept. 29, 2010 NABA lightweight title fight. He successfully defended his crown this past February, knocking out Hector Julio Avila, and in his last action June 24 via a 10-round decision Daniel Ruiz. The 31-year-old Gaudet “24-2, 10 Kos”, of Drummondville, Quebec, was the Canadian lightweight champion in 2005, as well as the NABA super featherweight champion crown in 2007-2008. Gaudet was stopped by defending champion Humberto Soto in their 2009 WBC super featherweight title fight. Another rivalry match on the Oct. 22 card pits unbeaten Columbian welterweight Samuel Vargas “7-0-1, 1 KO”, fighting out of Mississauga, Ontario, against outspoken Montreal favorite Ahmad Cheikho “6-3-2, 5 Kos”in the 8/10-round co-feature. The relentless, pressuring Vargas has been inactive since February due to an injury and recovery, while Cheikho finds himself in a crossroads fight. Tickets, starting at $35.00, may be purchased at The Hersey Centre Box Office, through Ticketmaster at 416.872.5000 or ticketmaster.ca.
